Photos of the day: set visit 2010

I visited The Office set in March while they filmed the last two episodes of Season 6 (what they call “cross-boarding”).

A more detailed report will come later of course, but here are a few non-spoilerish photos. Enjoy! :)

B.J. Novak Mindy Kaling

B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling get their makeup touched up by LaVerne right before shooting the Anthropologie scene in The Office episode The Chump.

Right before I took the photo, I said to them, “I’m taking an action shot of you guys, don’t look at the camera!” Mindy started laughing and B.J. looked straight at the camera. :)

More photos starting on the next page.

The Office ‘Secretary’s Day’ Q&A with Mindy Kaling

What was Steve Carell like as a director? Does the song “Secretary of Love” actually exist? Which unaired scenes simply must make it onto the Season 6 DVD?

Mindy Kaling answers these questions and more about The Office episode Secretary’s Day, which she penned.

And may I say that whenever Mindy gets her Q&A on, it’s always a chattin’ good time. Thank you, Ms. Mindy!

Heading down to The Office

March 22, 2010

I’m back at home now. I spent three amazing days on set and on location as they crossboarded the filming of the last two episodes of The Office.

They needed to shoot two episodes simultaneously because Friday was Steve Carell’s last day of shooting for the season. This means that for the three days I was there, Steve appeared in EVERY scene that was shot. That totaled to over 30 scenes and more than 30 hours on set!

I was truly inspired by Steve’s stamina and grace and good humor through it all.

I might post a few more non-spoilerish photos of the day, but aside from that, I won’t be posting any more information until we get closer to the Season 6 finale on May 20th.

A GINORMOUS thank you once again to everyone at The Office for letting me come and hang out. Every night I would go back to my hotel utterly exhausted, barely able to stand or speak. I honestly don’t know how y’all do it!

xoxo to all. :) Jennie

P.S. Here is the OfficeTally archive of past set visits.

B.J. Novak talks about the ‘Happy Hour’ tag

“In Japan, heart surgeon. Number one. Steady hand. One day, yakuza boss need new heart. I do operation. But, mistake! Yakuza boss die. Yakuza very mad. I hide in fishing boat, come to America. No English, no food, no money. Darryl give me job. Now I have house, American car, and new woman. Darryl save life. My big secret: I kill yakuza boss on purpose. I good surgeon. The best!”

The Office’s B.J. Novak was kind enough to provide some details about that amazingly hilarious tag from ‘The Office’ episode Happy Hour, starring Hide the warehouse worker:

It was a particular mission of mine to get that in the episode. We shot six versions — two entirely different backstories, and filmed each of them solo at the warehouse, solo at the bar, and at the bar with Darryl.

I liked the idea that Hide (played by Hidetoshi Imura) had a life story infinitely more dramatic than anyone else the documentary crew has been following, but that they had never thought to ask. He’s been a background player for years.

Hide improvised one piece of the monologue: the inclusion of “American car” among his good fortunes. I did not quite understand why someone from Japan would take such specific pride in owning an American car, but I enjoyed it and we went with it.

The Office ‘Sabre’ Q&A

Who was the real inspiration behind the Suck It? Was there an unaired Jim/Pam scene? How did cast members react to John as a director? Did NBC censor Michael when he said “Suck b—–“? Which cast member plans to direct an episode of The Office?

But most importantly, will Jen ever fulfill her dream of playing a Schrute?!

These questions and many, many more are answered by The Office’s Jen Celotta, Sabre writer, with a special appearance by John Krasinski, in his Office directorial debut. We also have some surprise visits by other show members!
